"They didn't quite do slavery here". No, but they did do it everywhere else!
@Unownsoldier385, 99% sure they had slavery there first. I'm sure the black population either say they are black or English. Not African-United Kingdomian and claim injustices left and right for being servants a really long time ago
@Richard Cypher, Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1833.
@Richard Cypher, We did - the Romans brought it over with them.
@Unownsoldier385, yeah that bothered me quite a bit since racism is very much a thing and the British Empire was built off of the backs of slaves.
@AverageBritishMale, slavery was alive and well way before the romans got there
@Richard Cypher, yeah, I know.
@AverageBritishMale, that actually meant to be a reply to @Nellybert
@Richard Cypher, slavery is in out heritage. We should adopt it again, as going over and invading the holy land and burning witches.
@AverageBritishMale, The British empire has invaded almost every single country on the planet.
We get it there's no guns, but there's also no joke don't bother reading it.
@dogsowar2000, got about half way through and it made mewish I wasn't vaccinated as a child
@dogsowar2000, I wish I saw your comment before I read the whole bloody thing... oh no govnah I'm turning. Into one of them wankers
@dogsowar2000, As an Englishman its often vaguely amusing to see what foreigners think of us.
@Nellybert , As an American it's usually not very amusing what foreigners think of us
@Nellybert , I like the UK just fine but no one would want to read a giant list of things different about the US either
@Richard Cypher, I might. Depends what they were - and there'd be no point putting "lots of guns" several times, we know that! :p
@Jolee Bindo, What we think of you often depends which part of the States you're from - we like to be geographically specific in our bigoted generalisations.
@dogsowar2000, yeah no guns for law abiding citizens, plenty for criminals on the black market. smuggling isn't that hard.
@Fix Your Grammar, let the war begin?
@Nellybert , You'd be surprised how little guns there actually are. It isn't like everyone is toting, it is more like for every girl with a purse there is someone with a gun concealed. It also really depends on where you are 90% of California doesn't carry, and 70% of Texas does. And nobody is going to wave their guns around unless they are stupid or a criminal I keep mine in the small of my back when I carry and it is so small you could hangout with me all day and you wouldn't notice.
@Barry Dylan, I looked up the stats - 112 guns per 100 people in the US. You're the only nation on Earth with more guns than people! (We have 6.6 per 100 people, so are 82nd on the list of gun ownership).
I know that it's probably the case that 80% of the guns belong to 20% of the population, and the idea that all Americans are always packing is a gross over-generalisation, but you can see how we get the impression that there are a lot of guns over there can't you? Not a criticism, just saying that as a nation, you've got a lot of guns. 😋
@Nellybert , Yeah I have around 45ish in my safe. But that number doesn't sound right. We have the third largest population in the world and majority of people here do not own a single firearm.
@Barry Dylan, That figure came from the Congressional Research Service - which sounds like a legit source to me, but I can't verify that.
If you have 45 guns, then it'd only take basically 2 people like you per 100 population to get to roughly a 1:1 ratio between guns & people.
@Nellybert , Well I guess that makes sense. But it should also be said I never shoot more than half of them. I have a Mauser broomhandle made from the same year as Winston Churchill's. I never shoot it, and it sits in the back of the safe. But it still counts as a gun regardless of whether or not it has been fired since the 1960's.
@Barry Dylan, Very nice. Didn't even know Churchill ever had an enemy firearm.
@mas2de, Well it was several times better than the rest of the infantry sidearms he even claimed he would have died if he didn't carry it into battle.
@Barry Dylan, the Germans did have Nice weaponry. I'd still take a 1911, CZ 75 etc over a Mauser broomhandle or even a Luger. Though the Luger might be a tough call.
@mas2de, Well the Mauser was amazing because of it's reload speed plus it's large Calibre size. But yeah 1911's are still nicer.
Can confirm most of this. There are guns, but only farmers own them; there are lots of people who aren't accepting of foreigners; our healthcare work in the same way that a car works until the owner runs of of money for fuel; Cornwall isn't a country (but it's the closest thing we have to hillbilly country); we have our fair share of uneducated people; I refrigerate my eggs/butter; we do have dryers (they're called washing lines and they are energy efficient (and work well in warmer countries like the US (try it))); we sort of have bumper stickers, but they're on the front windscreens of elderly peoples' cars and show that they are either members of the National Trust (thus gaining entering to National Parks/Heritage sights) or have been to Longleat Safari Park; and we drive on the correct side of the road.
@AverageBritishMale, tried a washing line once. My linens got covered in bugs and pollen, which made me have to do laundry again.
@I cut your face, Set it up inside, then.
@AverageBritishMale, I do that with some things, like bed sheets and towels
@I cut your face, Really? I was taking the piss. Do you lot really not use the fork in your left hands?
@AverageBritishMale, I do, but that's because I'm left handed. And even then, I put my fork in my right hand when cutting meat. Just something I was taught growing up.
@I cut your face, And which way is upside-down to you? We do it with the prongs curving downwards towards the plate (at least most of us do).
@AverageBritishMale, we do that too, at least those of us who actually know the proper way to use silverware.
@I cut your face, likewise.
@AverageBritishMale, I believe that many years ago etiquette was to hold the fork in your left hand when cutting something with the knife, then put the knife down and transfer the fork to your right hand to pick up the food, before transferring it back to your left hand, picking the knife up with the right and repeating.
@AverageBritishMale, can also confirm
@I cut your face, as i believe, table manner customs are different in each culture and if im not mistaken, in america its suppose to be cut with fork in left then after cutting transfer to the right hand with prongs up. Or at least thats what i was taught.
@Nellybert , I've been told by reputable sources that one is to Never transfer the utensils between hands. You Are supposed to hold the fork with the left and the knife with the right (but f that, I'm right handed), but once you use them correctly or incorrectly, it is worse to swap back and forth, and you're supposed to eat with the concave side of the silverware down as it follows the curve of the mouth more comfortably.
I do almost none of this correctly unless I am to dine with royalty or a decent and respectable US President. Neither of which I forsee happening.
@mas2de, Looking in to it, you're right - swapping was what people used to do, the etiquette book was saying to stop.
I have to admit that I do follow the correct etiquette, but only because that how I was brought up so never thought about doing it differently. (At least until I was a teenager out with mates and a big bowl of stuff to share came out - then I'd revert to a feral animal state to get as much as possible).
@Nellybert , as an engineering student I find etiquette and social norms sometimes strange and unintuitive. It seems to have gone through changes throughout the ages (which you confirmed. Thank you.) I think I will just not eat like a slob and be okay and if need be I will look up your etiquette book.
Thank you Nellybert.
@mas2de, I try not to think too much about social norms, the closer you look the less sense society seems to make.
But if you ever find yourself wondering how you *should* act in a social situation, I'd recommend finding a book on etiquette from Victorian England - a lot of people back then seemed to have nothing better to do than decide the exact right way to hold a fish knife.
@mas2de, ya, as long as you aren't a slob and the food gets to your mouth, then job well done.
@CynicalSirr, most of the time.
I read half of that waiting for a joke

What did you say about my guns??🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Their education must really be better *than ours...
Cornwall isn't technically it's own country. They parade around as if they are, fly their own flag everywhere, claim they're "Cornish" not "English" but nevertheless, it's still in England.
@Timohfee, Sounds a lot like Texas
What the hell is this? We beat those teatoddler idiots in the revolutionary war and the only reason we helped them in the world wars is because those wars would eventually come for us. I was rooting for all those brits to die in that movie Dunkirk, even though i know the ending already from history. A man can hope anyways. (joking btw, i like london and how much it rains there without warning)
@Z0IDBERG, What do you mean 'without warning'? You're in London, that should be all the warning you need! 😋
There is actually quite a lot of guns here you are not allowed to hide guns on your person and you need licenses, have to be locked up and the police can call at any time to check the guns
@Mr Moose Knuckle , there aren't many guns, anything that isn't a rifle or shotgun is essentially banned, and those are tightly regulated. Unless a farmer you will be hard pressed to find a gun
@Mr Moose Knuckle , As of 2015 (last year I can find figures on) there were 153,000 Firearms Certificates covering 520,000 rifles, and 580,000 Shotgun Certificates covering 1.7million shotguns. So there are about 650,000 people with about 2million guns between them - technically that could be called 'a lot of guns', but it equates to 6.6 per 100 people and puts us at 82 in the league table for gun ownership. (FYI - the US is #1. Only country to have more guns than people (112 per 100 people) and about twice the level of the next country on the list).
@Fallout267, you are still able to get pistols its just they have to be converted in to carbines and Scotland has the most strict gun policies you're not allowed any bb gun over 1 ft/p of muzzle energy including air rifles
@Fallout267, anyone can get a shotgun just got to have a clean record and for rifles you have to prove you hunt or use for sports shooting :-)
I wonder if they have guns
You had me until Obama is considered a hero.
@GunSupporter, As we have universal healthcare and no guns, I imagine that the main policies of his which would upset some Americans wouldn't be an issue here.
And I wouldn't say 'hero', but I think we mostly looked at him and thought 'he seems like a nice guy'.
@Nellybert , *near universal healthcare and very strict gun control laws. Sorry I don't mean to be a twat about this.
@LeafOnTheW1nd, Fair enough. But in comparison to the USA (and from the statement and username, I'm assuming that I was replying to an American Republican) it's as near as dammit universal and I'm sure that he'd put our laws on a par with 'no guns'. (Especially as citing 'home defence' or 'in case them terrorists come near my land' on a license application will pretty much guarantee you don't get a gun).
@Nellybert , not a Republican, just pro individual rights.
Those two quotes will stop you from getting a pistol, but not a rifle.
You can say it had good intentions, but Obamacare was an abortion.
And obviously any restriction on gun rights would be a problem with many Americans.
@GunSupporter, Okay, I just used the word to indicate my assumption that you were pro-gun and anti Obama-care - was just for brevity.
Over here you can't get a pistol at all - they were banned 20 years ago after our only ever school shooting. You can get a shotgun (max 3 round capacity, no solid slugs) or a rifle (.22 calibre max, rimfire only, 3 round max clip capacity) - but you'd need a specific reason. For example, you could get a rifle for shooting foxes - but if you were caught using it to shoot squirrels you'd be in breach of your license conditions and they could take it away.
Also, before they grant a license you need a visit from the police to confirm that you have a secure gun cabinet to store them in. Oh, and all sales have to go through a licensed dealer.
@Nellybert , to be honest I understand the no Pistol laws. Our right to firearms it to protect our selves from external threats and our own government, you don't do that with a pistol. But the way things are now you can't give an inch because they are taking everything they can.
@GunSupporter, If you're facing up to the US Marine Corps (and the other 1.5million soldiers in the US Army), you might need something a little bigger than an AR-15! (I know nothing about guns, I'm just using that as an example of a commercially available rifle because I don't know any others off hand).
All we see of US politics is the headline stuff in the mainstream media, so I don't know enough to comment - also, totally different perspective (not being American) means it wouldn't be right for me to make judgements on things I haven't experience of.
@Nellybert , good man. I like you.
Sounds like hell on earth
Tl;Dr Britain uses different words for chips (french fries) and crisps (chips), drive on the left side of the road, they love Obama and everyone gets along. Save yourself the time reading that whole thing it isn't funny but it is extremely informational.
"Look how great England is compared to American" "Obama was a hero" bull crap. I notice they failed to mention that England (and most of Europe for that matter) is being overrun by Islamic migrants who don't want to adapt to western culture, rape women on New Years, and bomb concerts
@Flatty, just no
@Flatty, folks I found the bigot!
@LeafOnTheW1nd, right because the 1200 German women raped by 2000 men of "Arab or not (*north*) African appearance" is just my opinion. The four terrorist attacks in England this year is also just my opinion. I wonder who perpetrated those attacks? Oh that's right, muslims. And yet people on the left want America to have open boards. We have proof that it's not a good idea yet you all bashed Trump for his immigration ban
@Flatty, Just to be pedantic - only 3 of those were done by Islamic terrorists. The 4th was some mental Welsh dude 'getting revenge' by driving a van in to a group of innocent people.
And we don't generally think Obama was a 'hero' - but we do think he came across as a genuinely nice guy and a good advert for America.
@Nellybert , to elaborate on that point, in those three terrorist attacks many of the first responders and civilians involved in rescuing people fleeing the area were Muslims
@Flatty, idiotic statement! The terror attacks weren't even migrants, there were also many muslims who helped the victims (doctors, paramedics, taxi drivers, random people taking strangers in who needed help)
@loobyroberts, Actually, to be fair, one was British born, but I believe that there was at least one Libyan, one Moroccan and one Pakistani born guy involved in the attacks.
But you're right about it being an idiotic statement and that many people who came to the victims' aid were Muslim.
@loobyroberts, of course all muslims aren't terrorist. But it's not Buddhists executing Christians and Jews. There is no problem with the muslims who want to migrate to Europe or the US as long as they follow our laws. The problem is 680 million muslims, most of them in the Middle East, believe in sharia law or that honor killings are sometimes ok or that suicide bombings can be justified. Those are the people I don't want I'm my country.
"Nearly everyone is better educated *then* we are"
There is nothing wrong with guns as long as they aren't in the hands of mentally abnormal people.
Why so many downvotes? It was still a fun read even if some of it is incorrect or is something you don't agree with.
Almost a novel
I love my guns.
Not afraid of their government... just accepting docile sheep that have no freedom.
