I replaced “Mary Sue” with “Rey” on Wikipedia. Still checks out.
I mean... it’s kinda true
@xamotzarm, only kinda, it's completely true. This is why people call her a Mary Sue
@Jakobian, MaRey Sue*
I guess you could say she's a maREY sue
Remember, you aren't a true Star Wars fan unless you hate Star Wars
The incel is strong with this one.
You’ve gotta be shjtting me that people are still complaining about this. Luke and Anakin did some ridiculous shjt as well (Luke pulled off what was considered an impossible move to blow up the death star while his first time flying in space ever, and Anakin blew up the trade federation ship when he was like 11). This isnt a mArY sUe issue, it’s always been a flaw with the Star Wars protagonists.
@K1l, I'm defence of Luke, the force missile was his one OP moment. As for anything else people forget that whenever he fought Darth Vader he LOST consistently until the third film. He needed training and best of all he was his own character that didn't show up others characters just to look cooler.
Rey could of been shown to be a powerful force user... but character assassinatingLuke Skywalker by making him a tittie sucking hopeless hermit just so Rey can be the optimistic hopeful new stand in with amaze-balls powers is a hallmark of Mary Sue characterisation.
Luke's character was a hopeful heroic underdog, who believed in the redemption of anyone. Sound familiar? That's because Ray was supposed to replace Luke. But two of the same characters? Can't have that.
So let's make Luke, redeemed of Darth Vader, try to kill his sleeping Nephew because he felt a little off about him. Then let's have him abandon the Jedi way, let's have him give up. Just so Rey can look better by comparison.
@Sambob, there are other methods to make a character a Mary Sue beyond "my character is stronger than that character".
@Sambob, don't forget that Obi-wan's force ghost was helping him in the trench run, and his short stint with the dark side
@K1l, Luke had trained for years and was able to hit 2m targets with outdated non military hardware, had a veteran astromech to help with stabilization and other flight issues, had an unknown amount of training with Obi-wan in concentrating on objects with the force, and had Obi-wan's force ghost helping him. Ray picked up a lightsaber and was immediately at the level of an average jedi guardian nearly ready to become a knight, after having spent what was probably years using a weapon that she could hold anywhere, without any training
@Sambob, Luke was the balance of the force, a Jedi with the dark side in him.
He saw Ben as powerful and was afraid.
fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.
He feared Ben, he hates what he thought he had to do to him which lead to Ben (and the galaxy as a result) suffer.
Ben was scared of what Luke tried to do to him which lead him to hate Luke.
