Sorry for using the phrase "bae" dont hate me please.
I still don't understand what this is... Can someone educate me?
@MySocksMissing, it resets your phone when you recieve it, doesn't delete anything, just makes the apple logo appear then disappear.
@MySocksMissing, it's a bug with iPhone software that causes the phone to power off then turn on when you receive that message
It was (is?) a specific message that would crash iPhones if it was received as a notification.
@MySocksMissing, it's so hillarious hahaha HA HA HA!!!!!!! Because he's trying to make it seem like his phone's malfunctioning to explain the like!!!!! Oh man this is so hahahaHAHA this is so FUAHAHAHAHAHA so funny!!!!!
@MySocksMissing, if you send it to someone with an iPhone it will crash the phone and when it turns back on they won't be able to open up the messaging app until you text them again
@MySocksMissing, if you have an iphone and someone sends it to you it will restart it. not sure if it works anymore.
@MySocksMissing, if you have an iPhone and you receive this text, your phone will temporarily crash. The phone apparently can't handle computing the different characters and just shuts down
@MySocksMissing, I'm so glad to be an idiot amongst scholars. Thank you!
@Captain Zenu, My brother did this to me and it didn't do anything, I just thought he had gone insane.
@ fig newton, no he's turning her phone off so she can't tell it only works when sent to a phone entering it into your own phone won't work
@KiwiAndOranges, as of yesterday I can say it does
A patch is available to jailbreak users, but Apple likely will just make everyone upgrade to a new iOS rather than a patch/hotfix for running systems.
@MySocksMissing, it is a bug in how the notifications ceter handles the text. Form what I understand it has to pop up on your lock screen or in the notification bar to work and it dosent matter if it is a text message or a Imessage. Turning off notifications aparently prevents the phone from crashing.
@MySocksMissing, I feel like there are a lot of misconceptions about this. For one this isn't the whole text. You have to send more for it to work. Also it doesn't work on all iPhones. I have a friend with a 5s and one with a 5c. The code worked on the 5c but not on the 5s. I'm not sure about any other models. And lastly it actually doesn't restart the phone, it just makes it look like it does. My friend was talking on the phone when I sent him the text and he felt it vibrate as if it were restarting and looked at it and it had the Apple logo but he could still hear and talk to his wife.
@Gilman22, in what programming language is it written?
It's a Unicode message. Unicode is a multi-language character set, which shows all the extra marks used in other languages not used in English, including right-to-left languages and symbolic languages like Hebrew. People have been finding ways of making text "pictures" using Unicode characters. This was one of them, but it was found to crash the Unicode handler in the iPhone operating system (version 8 only)
@Gilman22, The bug, AFAIK, only exists in iOS version 8. According to angelXwind, who wrote the jailbreak patch: "The bug is caused by having at least 2 of the certain text characters (separated by with spaces) combined with any RTL character". It causes the CoreText module to crash, restarting Springboard, the iOS shell. AFAIK, restarting Springboard (which is NOT a full reboot) would not stop the Phone application from working, explaining why your friend's call did not get dropped.
Sorry about the triple post. I didn't think my comment had submitted properly, so I tried again (and again)
@SolarPenguin, no idea at all my kind penguin. I merely know the effects.
I fuc*ing hate my friend for this
@The boondocks, I used to do this to my friend all the time. Until they fixed it
@Baltowolf12, it was so annoying and you, you are not a right person
Did we not just establish in this update to never use that b-word ever?!
@FunnyPics Waiter, No
*clears throat and prepared for caps lock rage*
WE AGREED TO NEVER BRING THAT WORD TO THIS APP
I accidentally sent that to my bae... 😓
I apologize for using the b word. I promise it wont happen again.
I wonder what would happen if someone posted this in the comments section… probably nothing
@Bag Man, Try it! For science?
You have pissed off all the users of the iPhone version of this app. Everytime one of us tries to view the comments on this pic, the app crashes.
BTW, the bug is not fixed yet by Apple, but jailbreak users have a patch out already.
I have never received one of these texts, I'm not planning on receiving one, but I'm still confused as to what they are
@DazBlane, if you have an iphone it will restart it. not sure if it works anymore.
It's a bug in how the iPhone renders Unicode characters in specific situations. That particular Unicode string makes the decoder module act like users here do to spiders. (NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE).
There is a patch for jailbreak users, but Apple has not published an update yet, even if they HAVE given a workaraound.
